China Reports 1,437 Covid-19 Confirmed Cases, 17 Million Shenzhen Residents in Lockdown

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, BEIJING – Mainland China reported 1,437 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus as of March 13.

China’s national health authority on Monday (14/3/2022), said this figure was down compared to the previous day’s 1,938 cases which saw China put 17 million residents in Shenzhen under lockdown on Sunday.

The National Health Commission said 1,337 cases were locally transmitted, a decline compared with 1,807 cases the day before.

The number of new asymptomatic cases, which China does not classify as confirmed cases, stood at 906, a decline from 1,455 the day before.

There were no new deaths, leaving the death toll unchanged at 4,636.

As of March 13, mainland China had confirmed 116,902 cases.

The southern tech hub of Shenzhen told all residents to stay at home.

The city is battling to eradicate the Omicron outbreak linked to virus-hit neighboring Hong Kong.

“The lockdown and suspension of public transport will last until March 20,” the city government notice said.

Shenzhen will launch three rounds of mass testing.

The move extends the previous lockdown imposed in the city’s central business district.

Shenzhen reported 66 new infections on Sunday – a fraction of the 32,430 confirmed on the same day in Hong Kong.
