9 Dead and 57 Injured in Russian Attack on Ukrainian Military Base

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – Ukrainian authorities say at least nine people were killed and 57 injured in a Russian air strike on a large Ukrainian military base near the Polish border on Sunday (13/3/2022).

A representative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense told Reuters that the ministry is still trying to ascertain whether any foreign instructors were at the facility at the time of the attack.

The military training facility, the largest in the west of the country and traditionally a joint training ground with NATO, is located less than 25 km from the Polish border.

The Kremlin has not commented on the missile strike so close to the border with NATO.

Quoted from CNAregional governor Maksym Kozytskyy said Russian aircraft fired about 30 rockets at the facility.

He added that several rockets had been intercepted before hitting the military base.

An eye witness Reuters saw 19 ambulances with sirens driving from the direction of the base after the attack and black smoke rising from the area.

The 360 ​​sq km facility is one of the largest and largest in Ukraine in the western part of the country.

“Poland condemns any element of aggression against Ukraine, including the shooting of the Yavoriv base,” a Polish foreign ministry spokesman said in a message sent to Reuters.

The mayor of another city in western Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk, said Russian troops were also continuing to attack the airport, without any initial reports of casualties.
