Understanding how to clean tartar properly is very necessary so that teeth are free from tartar. In addition, you are also advised to always maintain cleanliness and dental health to prevent it from reappearing.

Tartar can be a common dental problem. Tartar is formed when bacteria and food debris stick to the teeth and harden. If left untreated for too long, tartar can cause bad breath, cavities, gingivitis, and dislodged teeth.

How to Clean Tartar

Tartar can be recognized by the presence of a yellow or brown layer of dirt between the teeth or on the back of the teeth. To clean tartar, you have to go to the dentist.

The dentist will do scaling teeth as a way of cleaning tartar. In this procedure, the entire tartar will be cleaned using an scraper (scaler).

If the amount of tartar is high enough to cause gum disease, the dentist will recommend a deep cleaning (deep cleaning) by adding procedure root planing.

In this procedure, the dentist will flatten or smooth the rough surface of the tooth root. The goal is to help the gums stick back to your teeth.

This method of cleaning tartar takes about 15–45 minutes, depending on the condition and the amount of tartar being cleaned. Also, it may take several visits to the dentist to thoroughly clean the tartar.

Prevent Tartar

The only best way to clean tartar is to go to the dentist. However, you can prevent tartar from forming and accumulating by keeping your teeth clean and healthy.

Some ways that can be done to prevent tartar include:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day, after eating and before going to bed, for two minutes each
  • Use toothpaste containing fluoride to help repair damaged tooth enamel
  • Using dental floss after brushing your teeth to clean food residue between your teeth
  • Gargle with mouthwash (mouthwash) antiseptic to help kill bacteria in the mouth
  • Reduce consumption of sugary foods and drinks
  • Quit smoking
  • Go to the dentist every 6 months to check the condition of dental health

There is no way to clean tartar other than the procedure scaling. Various natural ways that are claimed to be effective in cleaning tartar have not been proven to be effective. If you have tartar, don’t hesitate to go to the dentist to get the right treatment.
