It looks like HBO Max is continuing to add new projects to the streaming platform, including projects from the DC Comics property. They are rumored to be developing a new television series about the characters Penguin from the movie The Batman which fans have been waiting for. Penguin, is one of the villains of the film, played by Colin Farrell. The series will be produced by the director Matt Reeves along with Dylan Clark.
But unfortunately, the exact details of this project are not very clear. Deadline reports that the series will be an origin story with a “Scarface-like” story that highlights the rise of Oswald Cobblepot’s criminal empire. No actor has been confirmed to star in the project, but Farrell appears to have been approached to reprise his role as the boss of the crime organization. Screenwriter Lauren LeFranc, who has been involved in Impulse and Agents of SHIELDwill write the script for the series.
The series will focus on Cobblepot’s past and see his rise to power in the Gotham slums rather than his story as an established criminal kingpin. This character has been played by several actors in films and live-action series such as Danny DeVito who famously played the Penguin in Batman Returns and Robin Lord Taylor who played him in the series Gotham.
For your information, this project is not the first spin-off of The Batman which is under development. Previously, there was also a series that focused on the story of corrupt cops in the Gotham Police Department which will be a prequel to the film which will be handled by Joe Barton as showrunner. The series will take place in the first year of Batman’s adventures as a crime-fighter, while the film is set in the superhero’s second year.
Film The Batman is a story set with Bruce Wayne who has entered the second year of his “career” as Batman. At first Bruce Wayne was discouraged by the lack of influence he had on crime in Gotham when suddenly a series of murders took place at the hands of The Riddler. This will later reveal a dark secret about his parents, Bruce is also forced to confront the corruption that is taking place in the shadows of his city, all the while trying to catch The Riddler before he kills again.
Along with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, the film also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, and Jeffery Wright. as Commissioner Gordon. The Batman is currently scheduled to be released on March 4, 2022.
