HBO Max has revealed a new trailer for Our Flag Means Death, a new comedy series about the adventures of a nobleman who turned himself into a pirate. The trailer also comes with a release date, which sets the series premiere this March 3.

This new trailer introduces us to Stede Bonnet, a wealthy gentleman who dreams of sailing into the dangerous waters of the pirate world. Willing to leave his comfortable life behind for the thrill of the ocean, Stede wants to build a reputation for himself as one of the most prominent pirates who crossed the Seven Seas. However, there is a small flaw in Stede’s plan: he hates violence and wants to be remembered as a gentle and kind pirate.

Stede’s dream of becoming a pirate comes true when he meets the legendary Blackbeard. However, in contrast to Stede, Blackbeard is a brutal leader who strikes fear in the hearts of his enemies and friends, terrorizing the oceans. Stede gets a golden opportunity to learn to be a pirate from the best, it may also mean putting aside his morals, or perhaps, as the trailer shows, Stede’s presence might help soften Blackbeard’s heart.

Star Flight of the ConchordsRhys Darby will be the main character of this series along with Taika Waititi (Free Guy) who plays Blackbeard. Our Flag Means Death also stars Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones .

The series is based on the real life of Stede Bonnet, who is known as “The Gentleman Pirate” because he chose to change from a comfortable, bourgeois life full of aristocratic wealth and switch to a life of criminal adventure on the high seas. Waititi also serves as executive producer at Our Flag Means Death and will direct the pilot episode. The series was created and overseen by David Jenkins (People of Earth), who also serves as executive producer alongside Garrett Basch (What We Do in the Shadows, Natch) and Dan Halsted (Garden State).
