After a long wait, OPPO has finally officially launched its newest premium flagship smartphone, OPPO Find X5 Series. This smartphone comes with important improvements in image processing, battery technology, and even the quality of the body.
The latest series debuted with two devices with a similar design, OPPO Find X5 as a vanilla model and OPPO Find X5 Pro, which came as the highest model. Yes! There is one other model that comes with the title OPPO Find X5 Lite.
Let’s focus on the highest model. Like the Find X3 model, the OPPO Find X5 Pro has two 50 MP cameras (wide and ultra-wide) based on the Sony IMX766 sensor (1/1.56″, 1.0 m). However, OPPO has mixed this smartphone with related supporting hardware and more sophisticated processing algorithms.
Meanwhile, the 6nm MariSilicon X chipset accounts for a lot of the upgrades. The chipset is claimed to be capable of AI-assisted noise reduction and other image processing tasks. This enables Ultra 4K Night Video mode so there is less noise and better colors than regular night videos.
This mode is available on both wide and ultra-wide cameras. OPPO also claims that its custom chipset allows the device to record HDR video at 20-bit per channel. That is, it has a dynamic range of up to 120 dB (four times greater than the Find X3 Pro).
OPPO is also still equipping this smartphone with Pro Mode and in it users can find the Hasselblad Natural Color Calibration feature. This feature relies on a new 13-channel color sensor (replacing the 5-channel sensor in the X3 generation).
In addition, OPPO also uses a front glass element on the camera, which improves color accuracy and reduces chromatic aberration. The legendary camera maker also helped develop Master filters so users can add some style to the photos they shoot with a few taps.
The wide lens offers the latest 5-axis optical image stabilization system that combines lens and sensor shift technology. This is a first in a smartphone, said OPPO. It can correct hand shake by up to 3° and can be used for photos and videos (electronic stabilization is also used).
As for the ultrawide camera, it only has a 110° field of view, which isn’t very wide (but as big as the X3 Pro). The telephoto camera doesn’t get much of a touch up on the OPPO Find X5 Pro, apparently the same as the 13 MP sensor and 2x (52mm) optical zoom and 5x hybrid zoom.
Then, what about the front camera? OPPO uses a dedicated Sony IMX709 sensor with RGBW sub-pixels. Those white sub-pixels allow the sensor to capture 60% more light, but process complex RGBW data, so the task is again left to the MariSilicon chipset.
Also, this front camera works by default to 80° FoV, but will switch to 90° automatically when it detects a group selfie. OPPO has also updated the front display with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and has a variable refresh rate of 1Hz to 120Hz.
This is an LTPO panel with a resolution of 3,216 x 1,440 pixels and has 10-bit color rendering and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. Interestingly, touch sampling can reach 1,000Hz so the device can react instantly.
No need to worry when using this smartphone in the sun. The reason is, OPPO packs the OPPO Find X5 Pro screen with a brightness of up to 1,300 nits. In addition, the screen is also color calibrated at various brightness levels to ensure the picture is perfect.
The X5 Pro is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance. The screen has also been protected with Gorilla Glass Victus, and the back is made of ceramic. OPPO claims that the rear body is twice as strong as the glass panel.
The smartphone is basically the same size as the X3 Pro, but because the body is made of ceramic instead of glass, it weighs 218g (up from 193g). On the plus side, ceramic has better thermal conductivity than glass, which improves cooling.
Obviously, this is fine for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, which has a lot of power, but requires good cooling to sustain it. This smartphone comes with ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12. Update 0.1 brings enhanced aesthetics, better privacy and security features.
Also new is the Multi-Screen Connect feature, which allows users to switch seamlessly when interfacing this smartphone with a Windows-based PC. Yes! This makes OPPO Find X5 Pro more optimal to boost user productivity.
Then, what about the power supply sector? This is an important thing that must be known by those who are interested in buying OPPO Find X5 Pro. OPPO managed to fit a bigger battery inside this device, 5,000 mAh (up from 4,500 mAh).
OPPO Find X5 Pro also supports 80W SuperVOOC, which can do 0 – 50% charging sprints in 12 minutes. Wireless charging is also faster thanks to the support for AirVOOC 50W, which can be fully charged in just 47 minutes.
This is where the Battery Health Engine comes into play. OPPO claims that the support can extend battery life so that it will last from 1,600 charge cycles before dropping to 80% capacity (which is significantly longer than a typical smartphone battery which drops to 80% after 800 cycles).
Another feature that improves battery life is the 3D graphene film that covers the charging coil and motherboard. When using the 50W wireless charger, the smartphone remains 3° cooler than “some competitors”.
OPPO confirms that the 3D graphene film can help keep the display driver chipset and the screen itself cool. And for the embedded Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, OPPO inserts a vapor chamber that is 75% larger than the previous generation.
This smartphone has stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. There’s only one wired port, USB-C, wireless connectivity including a “360° smart antenna” and two always-on power amps. The system has four antennas and the device automatically switches to the strongest signal.
Currently, OPPO has opened pre-order offers for OPPO Find X5 Pro in several countries in Europe. Meanwhile, the open sale, aka open sale, will be held starting March 14. It will be available in one configuration, 12GB/256GB for €1,300. There are two colors offered, Ceramic White and Glaze Black.
