Actor O Yeong Su who plays Oh Il Nam or player number 001 in Squid Game won the 2022 Golden Globe trophy. The President of South Korea, Moon Jae In, expressed his feelings of pride.

O Yeong Su had a career in the entertainment industry for decades before finally getting famous thanks to Squid Game. This is the first Golden Globe trophy that he has received in his career in the acting world.

O Yeong Su won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category. Lee Jung Jae, his Squid Game co-star, was also nominated in a different category in the same event but failed to win a trophy.

South Korean President Moon Jae In commented on O Yeong Su’s win at this year’s Golden Globe.

“I would like to express my respect and gratitude to actor O Yeong-su who is known as Grandpa Gganbu,” Moon Jae In was quoted as saying by the Korea Herald.

Moon Jae In continued, “His acting journey of more than half a century has finally broken through cultural boundaries and differences, creating a great emotional impression and sticking in the world,” continued Moon Jae In.

At the age of 77 years, O Yeong Su has received four awards for his acting career. These include Best Actor (Theater) Baeksang Arts Awards 1994, Best Actor Dong-A Theater Awards 1979, Best Actor National Theater Association of Korea 2000, and Best Actor Seoul Theater Festival 2006.

Now even though he is already known by Netflix viewers around the world, O Yeong Su chooses to stay grounded. He even had time to refuse an offer to be a star in a product advertisement.

In addition to congratulating O Yeong Su, President Moon Jae In also gave his appreciation to Squid Game, director Hwang Dong Hyuk, and actor Lee Jung Jae.

“The message that Squid Game conveys is very heavy. On the outside, Squid Game shows an extreme game that separates winners and losers. But there is a hidden message that tells the story of not losing hope and humanity despite facing difficulties,” added Moon Jae In.

“I want to give applause to director Hwang Dong Hyuk and the production crew, who made us proud and raised the status of our nation, and also to actor Lee Jung Jae, who gave his best performance,” he concluded.
