VIVA – Novak Djokovic finally tumbled from the world number one ranking and gave it to Daniil Medvedev, after being knocked out of the ATP Dubai tournament by Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely, last Thursday 24 February 2022.
Djokovic, playing his first tournament in 2022 after being deported from Australia, lost 4-6, 6-7 (4/7) in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, US Open champion Medvedev, who is currently competing in the Acapulco tournament, became the third Russian after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin to successfully occupy world number one.
He will be the first person besides Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray to top the rankings since February 1, 2004.
Djokovic was number one for a total of 361 weeks of his career.
Vesely, ranked 123 in the world and having beaten Djokovic in Monte Carlo in 2016, will face sixth-seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov or Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania for a place in the final.
