VIVA – Lokomotiv Moscow head coach Markus Gisdol has resigned from his position due to his opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Gisdol has been in charge of the Russian club since October last year, but felt unable to continue working in Russia after the country started the war in Ukraine.

Gisdol explained that war was not only against his personal values, but he could not focus on football while the Ukrainian people were suffering from Russian bombings and attacks.

“Being a football coach is the best job in the world, but I can’t do that job in a country whose leader has invaded other countries in the middle of Europe,” Gisdol said. BildWednesday 2 March 2022.

“It is not in line with my values and therefore I resign as manager of Lokomotiv Moscow immediately,” he added.

“I can’t stand on the training ground in Moscow and coach the players, asking them to be professionals, when a few kilometers away there are orders being given that bring suffering to people across the country.”

Gisdol does not regret his decision to resign. He considers what he does right according to his conscience.
