MediaTek, a company known as a maker of mid-range and affordable chipsets, is now trying its luck to jump into the premium segment. Not only that, MediaTek is also working to rebrand its chipset lineup to compete with market leaders like Qualcomm.

This Taiwan-based company not only makes chipsets for smartphones but also launches chipsets for tablets, smart TVs, routers, and so on. Now, the company has announced its latest chipset for premium Chromebooks — the MediaTek Kompanio 1380.

Although previously MediaTek was present in the Chromebook segment, it was mostly limited to entry-level or budget products. With the new Kompanio 1380 chipset, MediaTek is now really trying to set foot in the premium segment.

MediaTek claims that the Kompanio 1380 has high performance and low power consumption. Speaking of embedded features, the Kompanio 1380 has an Octa-core CPU with four high-performance Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 3GHz for increased responsiveness.

The chipset packs a five-core Arm Mali-G57 GPU that supports fast and clear visuals. Meanwhile, quad-channel 2133MHz LPDDR4X support ensures plenty of data bandwidth. There is also a multi-core AI processor that speeds up AI-camera and AI-voice applications.

Interestingly, the Kompanio 1380 supports up to two 4K 60Hz displays, or one 4K 60Hz display plus two 4K 30Hz displays. With A1 Hardware Decoding, users can also stream 4K movies and TV shows. The chipset is also equipped with a dedicated ultra-low power digital audio signal processor (DSP) for voice assistants.

The new Acer Chromebook Spin 513 is the first device to be powered by this MediaTek Kompanio 1380 chipset and will go on sale starting June. MediaTek also promises that there will be more devices powered by this new chipset, and it will be launched in the market soon.
