As one of the most anticipated films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) this year, Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” will reveal the story behind the previously unknown figure of Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. This spy-thriller film stars a row of top actresses and actors such as Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina, and David Harbor as Alexei aka Red Guardian, with Cate Shortland as director. Kevin Feige as producer.
Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” is the first film in the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set after Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War” and before “Avengers: Infinity War”, this film has some interesting facts to know:
Produced on three continents
Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” was produced starting in 2019. The film was produced on three continents over 87 days. There are several areas that are the main locations of this film, namely the UK, Norway, Budapest, Morocco, and Atlanta. There are 64 sets built both inside and outside the studio. One of the largest locations built was the Dunsfold Aerodrome airfield which was turned into an Ohio airfield in the film. This setting was built by the creative team over six weeks. They spent several months growing grass and building roads.
Behind the Red Room and the Widows
The Red Room is a mysterious program that trains spies and assassins, including Natasha Romanoff. The exact location of the Red Room was never known – not even to Natasha. The Red Room itself is designed with a retro feel inspired by the architecture of the building in the 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s. In Marvel Studios’ film “Black Widow”, there are 22 Widows played by actresses, stuntwomen, dancers, to martial arts experts from various countries. Each has different skills and abilities, from Wushu, judo, to kickboxing.
Natasha and Yelena’s First Meeting
The scene of Natasha and Yelena’s first meeting after being separated since childhood became the moment when Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh first met. Florence began the first week of production with a scene where the brothers who had been separated for 20 years met. “After two days of knowing Scarlett, I immediately banged her head against the door and the kitchen counter,” said Florence. “That is the best way to get to know someone quickly – fight him for a week.”
