VIVA – Two former Manchester United captains, Gary Neville and Roy Keane accused Ralf Rangnick’s side of ‘tossing the towel’ or giving up in the 4-1 loss in the Manchester derby against hosts Manchester City on Sunday night 6 March 2022.
MU played well in the first half by trailing 1-2 at halftime. But United lost ground after Riyad Mahrez scored City’s third goal and that attitude angered the two former Red Devils captains.
“Manchester United’s response when they went down 1-3 was embarrassing. 92 per cent possession for ManCity? They gave up,” Neville told Sky Sports as quoted by Reuters, Monday 7 March 2022.
“They just walked around the pitch. Nothing good enough. No complaints. ManCity were amazing. But as a Manchester United fan, it’s a shame.”
“The score doesn’t matter. The response at 1-3 down is the problem. They’ve already thrown in the towel. At the end of the game, Manchester United finished like useless people. They were a disgrace in the last 25 minutes.”
Keane focused his criticism on the players rather than Rangnick’s decision to put midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in attack.
