A number of Squid Game stars are currently in California, United States to attend the SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild Awards). The South Korean TV series was nominated in 4 categories at the awards ceremony.
Actor Lee Jung Jae was nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series category. He competed with a number of top actors such as Brian Cox, Billy Crudup, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong.
Lee Jung Jae was also declared the winner of that category. He became the first Asian actor to win the SAG Awards.
When asked to give a speech on stage, Lee Jung Jae was accompanied by an interpreter. The actor admitted that he had prepared the speech, but decided not to read it.
“Oh my God, thank you very much! This is a very big thing that can happen to me,” said Lee Jung Jae.
“I actually wrote something, but I don’t think I will be able to read it. Thank you to the SAG-AFTRA Awards, thank you to the global audience who love Squid Game. Thank you to the Squid Game team too,” he concluded.
Besides Lee Jung Jae, Jung Ho Yeon was also nominated with Jennifer Aniston to Reese Witherspoon in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Drama Series category. Jung Ho Yeon also took home the trophy for that category.
“Thank you very much. I’ve been sitting in front of the big screen, watching you all and dreaming one day to be an actress. I’m very, very grateful. Thank you for opening the door for me, thank you Squid Game crew,” she said when speech without being able to hold back tears.
Squid Game became the first non-English TV series to be nominated at the SAG Awards. The series was nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensamble in a Drama Series category, which is the main award in the drama category.
In addition, actors Lee Jung Jae and Jung Ho Yeon, Squid Game were also nominated in the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Television Series category.
