Gundam Live Action Film Concept Art Finally Revealed

Sunrise and Legendary Pictures have finally revealed their first concept art for a live-action film Gundam upcoming event during the Netflix Festival Japan 2021. Directed by director Kong: Skull Island, Jordan Vogt-Robertsthe live-action film will be streamed exclusively by Netflix, although the streaming platform has yet to reveal a release date.

Gundam itself is a very popular Sunrise Mecha anime and is one of the biggest franchises in the world. This project will also be handled by Brian K. Vaughancreator of the comic books Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, and author of the best-selling novel, is writing the script that will adapt the story for Netflix in collaboration with Legendary Pictures.

This concept art shows one of the mecha robots known in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. The giant mecha stood in the middle of the city street, with buildings towering around it. However, the entire scene was engulfed in flames, which could be the result of several epic battles taking place in several metropolitan cities. While this image doesn’t reveal much, considering that Legendary did a fantastic job of producing the visually stunning mechanics of the Pacific Rim franchise, this concept art looks quite promising.

The release of this concept art shows that the live-action Gundam project is gaining enough public traction, and Sunrise and Legendary are now trying to find the right style before production begins.

Mobile Suit Gundam or better known as “First Gundam” is a mecha/robot-themed anime series created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatake and produced by Sunrise Inc. This anime series was first released from April 7, 1979 to January 26, 1980, spanning 43 episodes. While the character designer is Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and the mecha designer is Kunio Okawara, including the main robot, the RX-78-2 Gundam.
