The award-winning film Perempuan Tanah Jahanam by director Joko Anwar will be broadcast on Netflix on October 1. Incorporating elements of Javanese culture into its suspense-filled story, this horror thriller follows a woman who inherits a house in her ancestral village unaware of the dangers that await there.
Perempuan Tanah Jahanam stars Tara Basro who previously worked with Joko Anwar on several of his works, including Pengabdi Setan, Gundala, and A Copy of My Mind. The actress gave an outstanding performance as Maya, a woman who returns to her native village with her best friend, Dini (Marissa Anita). Arriving there, Maya immediately realized that the villagers had been trying to find and kill her, in order to lift the curse that had befell them for years. Besides Tara Basro and Marissa Anita. In addition, it features a series of well-known stars such as Ario Bayu, Asmara Abigail, Christine Hakim, Faradina Mufti, and many more.
This film premiered at the event Sundance Film Festival 2020 and has appeared in various other international film festivals, including International Film Festival Rotterdam Film Festival, Far East Film Festivaland won the Méliès International Festivals Federation (MIFF) Award for Best Asian Film at the event Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) 2020 in South Korea.
Tanah Jahanam women also made history by getting a total of 17 nominations at the event Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) 2020. The film won six Citra awards including Best Feature Film, Best Director for Joko Anwar, Best Supporting Actress for Christine Hakim, and Best Cinematography Director for Ical Tanjung.
