VIVA – Spain’s Rafael Nadal wins the 2022 Australian Open after defeating world number two from Russia Daniil Medvedev and breaking a Grand Slam record in Melbourne, Sunday 30 January 2022.
In the final which lasted five sets, Nadal came back from two sets down to claim a 2-6 6-7(7) 6-4 6-4 7-5, and also broke a record with 21 Grand Slam titles, beating Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer records.
Competing for approximately five hours and 24 minutes, Medvedev admitted that he was amazed by Nadal’s game and stamina.

“I tried to play well, I thought he was tired, he wasn’t. He’s an absolutely amazing champion,” said Medvedev, on court after the match, which was broadcast live on YouTube Australian Open TV.
Nadal, who started the season with a chronic foot injury. The tennis player who is now ranked fifth in the world was even infected with COVID-19 last December.
“For me it’s been amazing, to be back on tour and to have this trophy here I couldn’t be more grateful for,” said Nadal.
