Australia Announces Sanctions For 33 Russian Elites And Their Families, Chelsea Boss On List

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – The Australian government imposed new sanctions targeting 33 Russian businessmen as well as their family members.

This was conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Marise Payne, Monday (14/3/2022).

The list of those sanctioned includes Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich, Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller, Rossiya Bank Chairman Dmitry Lebedev, Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov, Transneft CEO Nikolay Tokarev, VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov and Head of the Direct Investment Fund. Russia (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev.

“The sanctions announced today reinforce Australia’s commitment to sanction individuals who have accumulated substantial personal wealth of economic and strategic significance to Russia, including as a result of their relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the statement said. from the Russian news agency, TASS.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden agreed to strengthen sanctions against Russia.

In a phone call on Sunday (13/3/2022), the two world leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.

Both Biden and Macron will join efforts to end the fighting, the Elysee Palace statement said.

Macron also offered his condolences for the death of American journalist Brent Renaud, who died while covering the war in Ukraine.

It is not clear what sanctions the two discussed.

The day before, the French leader spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire.
