Apple TV+ just announced that the actress Amanda Seyfried has signed a contract to join Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home) as the lead in the upcoming anthology drama series The Crowded Room. Seyfried will play a clinical psychologist and single mother named Rya as she faces the most challenging case of her career.

The Crowded Room is an anthology series that dives into the true stories of people who have “struggled and learned to successfully live with mental illness.” Described as a captivating thriller, the first season was inspired by the famous biography “The Minds of Billy Milligan” by writer Daniel Keyes.

Tom Holland is set to play Billy Milligan, the first person ever to be acquitted of a crime due to multiple personality disorder (now known as dissociative identity disorder). Milligan was acquitted of the rape and robbery of three women on the Ohio State University campus after psychologist Dorothy Turner diagnosed him with Disassociative Identity Disorder. After being diagnosed with 24 personalities, he was released from the Ohio mental health system in 1991 before dying of cancer in 2014.

Amanda Seyfried was previously involved in A Mouthful of Air in 2021 (directed by Amy Koppelman), Things Heard & Seen (directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini), and Mank in 2020 (directed by David Fincher). For his role in Mank, she was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category. Seyfried will also play Elizabeth Holmes in the upcoming Hulu series, The Dropout.

Holland himself is best known for playing Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was also widely praised for his performances in other films including Chaos Walking 2021 (directed by Doug Liman), Cherry (directed by Anthony and Joe Russo), and The Devil All the Time in 2020 (directed by Antonio Campos). Holland will also soon appear as Nathan Drake in Uncharted.

The Crowded Room will be a co-production between Apple Studios and New Regency. The series is created, written, and produced by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman. Executive producers of the project are Alexandra Milchan for EMJAG Productions and Arnon Milchan of New Regency, Yariv Milchan, and Michael Schaefer.
