KOMPAS.com – Tourists usually enjoy traveling if they come across some kind of spooky place or site. Moreover, if the tour provides a ‘ghost tour’ or ‘ghost tour’ service.

However, while not everyone is into ‘paranormal’ activities, some spooky sites can still be fun to explore due to their stunning locations, stunning architecture and complex histories.

There are many scary places or sites in the world, with some stories about ghosts, believed to be strong in mysticism or because they have a dark history such as murder.

Of all those places, we have summarized a few that are enough to make you shudder. One of the sites that we present also comes from Indonesia.

1. Château de Brissac, Brissac-Quincé, France

Château de Brissac can be said to be one of the tallest castles in France with 7 floors of its building.

Her name is probably better known as “The Green Lady”, a reference to the name ‘ghost’ Charlotte from France.

Charlotte, was the illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII who was murdered by her husband after being caught cheating.

She was given the nickname “The Green Lady” after the color of her dress when she was killed. The Lady in Green is said to be found wandering the chapel tower rooms and can even be heard whimpering in the early hours of the morning.

2. Al Hamra Peninsula, United Arab Emirates

The peninsula city of Al Hamra looks abandoned, located about 22 kilometers southwest of Ral Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. It’s located between big malls and a water park.

The town grew into a thriving pearl fishing village in the 1830s before being abandoned in 1968.

Built in the 14th century, the city consists of 13 mosques and more than 300 houses built of coral and mud.

People who visit the city claim to hear strange noises as well as apparitions of terrifying astral beings called “Jin” in Arabic. The djinn are said to have appeared in the form of a scary animal.

3. Whaley House, San Diego, California, United States of America

Whaley House founder Thomas Whaley built the real-estate home in 1857. Apparently, he was building on the ground of San Diego’s first public gallows.

Shortly after Whaley moved into the house, he heard heavy footsteps that were said to be the footsteps of the ghost of Yankee Jim or Jim Robinson, the criminal who was hanged on the ground four years before the mansion was built.

Since then, like a curse, the Whaley family ended tragically because of the death and suicide that mostly occurred in the house.

According to the Whaley House Museum, some family members still haunt the site with the strong scent of perfume and the lingering smell of cigar smoke.

4. Obvodny River, Saint Petersburg, Russia

The Obvodny River is also known as the ‘River of Suicide’. Since it was built in the late 18th century, strange happenings surround the site.

Starting from construction workers who often get headaches, sudden loud explosions to incidents of people committing suicide.

Even though many were saved from committing suicide, many people did not understand why they had intended to commit such a tragic act.

Many people who were rescued did not realize why they wanted to jump into the river.

Some people claim that it happened because the spirits were wandering restlessly there, and some also saw a woman in white dress floating right on the surface of the water before suddenly disappearing.

5. Forbidden City, Beijing, China

If you go to Beijing, it’s incomplete if you don’t stop by the Forbidden City. A building of the former Imperial Palace of China which is now functioned as a museum.

The site is recommended for those who like supernatural activities. During its 600 years as a palace, the site has many murder stories.

Starting from the murder that occurred between jealous concubines so as to poison each other, to the execution ordered by the Emperor.

There have been many strange stories since the palace opened to the public in the 1940s. The story that is most often heard is the appearance of a woman in white walking around the palace grounds and sobbing.

6. Isla de las Munecas aka Island of the Dolls, Mexico

Island of the Dolls is located in the neighborhood of Xochimilco, a UNESCO world heritage site for its well-preserved Aztec life.

The Island of Dolls, as the name suggests, consists of hundreds of dolls or doll parts that are hung from trees and spread across the grass.

What is the purpose of the hanging dolls? It is said that once upon a time there was a little girl who was found drowned around the island under mysterious circumstances.

Don Julian Santana Barrera was the island guard who first discovered the little girl’s body.

Before long, Julian saw a doll floating near the canal. Most likely, the doll belonged to the little girl.

Julian took the doll and hung it from the tree, as a way of showing respect for the girl’s spirit.

Despite Julian’s story, many people question the whereabouts of the drowning girl. Where is the girl’s body buried? Still a mystery.

Other reports conclude that Julian made up stories about a little girl who drowned in her solitude on the island.

7. Trunyan Village, Bali, Indonesia

Trunyan village may be said to be one of the many scary places in Indonesia.

If in general, people who die are buried or cremated, then in Trunyan Village, the bodies of the dead will be placed on the ground.

Usually, the bodies will be placed under the Taru Menyan tree covered with a bamboo fence because it is part of a local traditional procession.

It is said that, even if placed on the ground, the human body will not smell bad because local residents believe that the smell is directly absorbed by the Taru Menyan tree.
