VIVA – Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice as Manchester City confirmed the top of the Premier League standings after a 4-1 win in the Manchester derby against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium, Sunday 6 March 2022.
De Bruyne put ManCity ahead in the fifth minute with a low pass from Bernardo Silva. But United came back to equalize with a superb curling shot from Jadon Sancho.
De Bruyne put ManCity back in front with a goal that came after Phil Foden entered the Red Devils box and his shot was parried by David De Gea which created a mess which was cleared by the Belgian captain.
ManCity dominated after the break and made it 3-1 when De Bruyne curled a far corner on the edge of the box which was beautifully aimed at Mahrez for first time.
Mahrez completed City’s big win with a goal that was initially ruled to be offside but VAR judges Alex Telles had put the Algerian onside. He took advantage of Ilkay Gundogan’s pass to release an accurate shot.
With this 4-1 victory, ManCity collected 69 points from 28 matches. While Liverpool collected 63 points from 27 matches. MU dropped to fifth place and one point behind Arsenal, who have three games postponed.
