VIVA – History of Basketball, a game played between two teams of five players each on a rectangular court, usually indoors. Each team tries to score a goal by throwing the ball through the opponent’s goal, a raised horizontal hoop and a net called a basket.
The only major sport originating in the US, basketball was invented by James Naismith (1861–1939) on or about December 1, 1891, at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) International Training School (now Springfield College), Springfield, Massachusetts, in where Naismith is an instructor in physical education.
For the first game of basketball in 1891, Naismith used two half-bushet peach baskets as goals, which gave the sport its name.
