2021 Domestic Box Office Revenue Reaches $4.4 Billion, Still Far From Normal

The 2021 domestic box office revenue (United States) which is an important benchmark of the general revenue of Hollywood films is approaching $4.4 billion, which is a 91% increase from 2020. Although the number shows a positive development compared to last year which suffered due to the pandemic, it does not mean much, because the reason is that many cinemas are closed in 2020 and most of the films have been postponed.

This estimate was revealed by score, which projects that overall domestic box office revenue in 2021 is expected to reach $4.4 billion by the end of this December. Holiday weekends are usually a busy time in theaters and cinemas have been busy these days, especially with the attendance Spider-Man: No Way Home. according to VarietyNo Way Home has so far reached $467 million domestically and continues to break records.

It seems like superheroes don’t just save the people in the movie, they save the movie itself. Outside the world of superhero films, there are other successful films, such as No Time To Die ($160 million), F9: The Fast Saga ($173 million), A Quiet Place Part II ($160 million), and Free Guy ($121 million). It’s only natural because these films are action-packed blockbusters. Movies like West Side Story and The Last Duel – a feature-length film made for a more mature audience – didn’t have much luck.

Overall, while the box office numbers are showing expectations, they’re still down quite a bit from 2019, the last “normal” box office year. The 2021 figure turned out to be 61% lower than 2019. However, 2019 was a great year for the box office with films like Avengers: EndgameThe Lion KingCaptain MarvelStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerand Spider-Man: Far From Home.

There are several factors that may have contributed to the significantly lower figure. What is certain is that the pandemic has still not subsided and even new variants have emerged that are faster to spread, then the vaccination factor is not evenly distributed even though there are still some people who still feel unsafe going to the cinema. Beyond that, many studios release several films in a hybrid strategy. Warner Bros’ decision to release their film in theaters and on HBO Max hurt domestic box office figures for films like The Suicide Squad, Space Jam: A New Legacyand Dune. Fortunately, Warner Bros. does not plan to continue this strategy in 2022.

All of the above aside, the year 2022 has plenty of films that have the potential to bring people back into theaters and bring the numbers back to normal. Marvel Studios and Disney are likely to continue to thrive with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. DC is coming with The Batman and Black Adam. Outside of superheroes, there are also movies Jurassic World: Dominionthe third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, which is expected to be a giant at the box office.
